Alprax XR — Extended Release Alprazolam Tablets
Indications
Alprax XR (Alprazolam Extended Release) is prescribed for the management of:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
-
Short-term relief from anxiety symptoms
-
Anxiety associated with depressive disorders
-
Panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia
Pharmacology
Alprazolam belongs to the triazole benzodiazepine class and works as an anxiolytic with hypnotic and anticonvulsant properties. It is believed to act through the GABA-benzodiazepine receptor complex, causing a dose-dependent CNS depressant effect ranging from mild sedation to deep hypnosis.
Dosage & Administration

Initial dose: 0.25 mg – 0.5 mg three times daily

Dose may be increased every 3–4 days by no more than 1 mg/day, depending on patient response

Maximum daily dose: 4 mg/day
(Some panic disorder patients may require up to 10 mg/day, only under careful clinical supervision) -
Elderly patients / liver impairment: Start with 0.25 mg two or three times daily, increase slowly if needed

Alprazolam 1 mg XR: Taken once daily in the morning; swallow tablets whole (do not chew, crush, or break)
Drug Interactions
CNS depressant effects may increase when used together with:

Other psychotropic medications

Anticonvulsants
-
Antihistamines
-
Alcohol
-
Oral contraceptives
Side Effects
Side effects commonly appear during the first few days of treatment and usually improve with continued use. Possible reactions include:

Drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness

Headache, confusion
-
Depression, dry mouth

Constipation and general fatigue
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category: D — not recommended during pregnancy

Alprazolam may pass into breast milk, therefore breastfeeding is not advised for mothers taking Alprax XR
Precautions & Warnings

Alprax XR may cause physical and psychological dependence
-
Do not increase dose or stop therapy abruptly without medical supervision

Use cautiously in patients with:

Liver or kidney disorders
-
Sleep apnea
-
Chronic pulmonary disease or respiratory problems

Use in Children
The safety and effectiveness of Alprax XR have not been established in patients under 18 years of age.
Overdose
Symptoms may include:
-
Excessive sleepiness
-
Confusion
-
Poor coordination
-
Decreased reflexes
-
Coma
Immediate gastric lavage and supportive treatment are recommended in cases of overdose.
